Outreach Work

The Frank Chapman Centre and the Sandwell Residential Service is not just about the centres. You can have outdoor adventures and learn all about the outdoors right by you. We can bring our equipment to your site (subject to us checking its suitability) or perhaps there is somewhere in your region you think might be a good spot for us to work with your group.

This could be..

  • Problem solving in the school playground
  • A local nature walk or bushcraft session
  • Archery on the community hall’s field
  • First Aid for Young People

CASE STUDY: Engaging a group of young people in a youth centre.

Our team recently went out to a local Youth Centre to provide a evening of challenge180406_10150101995617113_513477112_6233213_4401988_n.

It was identified by staff that the boys were not engaging well and were relatively new to the centre and staff wanted a session to:

                  • Bond them to together
                  • Communicate and work as a team
                  • Provide healthy competition

We got out our ballista (catapult kit) and set to work with two teams to build the kit.

Once completed they could practice shooting the targets and have competitions over best build, longest shot, accuracy etc. culminating in a ‘egg shot’ – building a protective case for an egg.

The immediate feedback was excellent from the young people – they enjoyed the practicality and competitiveness of the activity. Some were natural knot-tiers too.  The staff later identified the session had kick started a process of bonding the group and had helped their relationships with the leaders.
